This specification establishes design, manufacture, quality, inspection, modification, strengthening and repair requirements for welded connections in machinery and equipment. It addresses topics including weld joint design, workmanship, quality acceptance criteria, nondestructive examination methods (visual, radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and liquid penetrant), repair of weld defects, and postweld heat treatment. It reflects the welding practices employed by manufacturers within the industry and incorporates various methods which have been proven successful by individual manufacturers. No restrictions are placed on the use of any welding process or procedure, provided the welding procedure is qualified in accordance with this specification. No attempt is made to limit or restrict the progression of welding technology for the manufacturing and repair of machinery and equipment, nor should any such limitation be inferred.
For the purpose of this document, machinery and equipment includes:
(1) Cranes for Industrial, Mill, Powerhouse, and Nuclear Facilities.
This specification is also applicable for other overhead material handling machinery and equipment that support and transport loads vertically or horizontally within the design rating during normal operations; and, to loading caused by abnormal operations or environmental events (e.g., seismic loading) when agreed upon between the Owner and Manufacturing Authority. See Commentary C-1.1 (1).
(2) Earthmoving, Construction, Agricultural, and Ground-Based Material Handling Equipment.
These are described as on- and off-highway machinery and associated implements, as well as support equipment such as conveyors. Products that this specification cover include, but are not limited to, crawlers, tractors, graders, loaders, off-highway trucks, power shovels, backhoes, mobile cranes, draglines, forklifts, power trucks, skid steers, and similar equipment.
(3) Presses and Press Components.
Products include, but are not limited to, stamping presses, brake presses, and arbor presses. See Commentary C-1.1 (3).
(4) Other Machinery and Equipment.
This document may be used for other machinery and equipment when agreed upon between the Owner and Manufacturing Authority.
