This subclause stipulates that the D1.1 code contains requirements for fabricating and erecting welded steel structures. When a contract specifies use of the code, all of its provisions are mandatory unless the contract documents or the Engineer modifies or exempts them.
AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 is divided into 11 individual clauses. Below is a general description of the information that each clause contains.
Clause 1 – General Requirements: Basic information on the scope and limitations of the code, key definitions, and the major responsibilities of the parties involved in steel fabrication.
Clause 2 – Normative References: A list of reference documents that assist in implementation of the code.
Clause 3 – Terms and Definitions: Terms and definitions relating to this code.
Clause 4 – Design of Welded Connections: Requirements for designing welded connections composed of tubular or nontubular product form members.
Clause 5 – Prequalification of WPSs: Requirements for exempting a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) from this code’s qualification testing requirements.
Clause 6 – Qualification: Requirements for the qualification of welding procedures and the welding personnel necessary to perform work to code requirements.
Clause 7 – Fabrication: Requirements for base metals, welding consumables, welding technique, welded details, material preparation and assembly, workmanship, weld repair, and other requirements for fabrication and erection of welded steel structures.
Clause 8 – Inspection: Criteria for qualifications and responsibilities of welding inspectors, acceptance criteria for production welds, procedures for visual inspection, RT, UT, and other NDT requirements.
Clause 9 – Stud Welding: Requirements for the welding of studs to structural steel.
Clause 10 – Tubular Structures: Exclusive tubular requirements. Additionally, the requirements of all other clauses apply to tubulars, unless specifically noted otherwise.
Clause 11 – Strengthening and Repair of Existing Structures: Provisions for welded modification or repair of existing steel structures.
