This standard covers the performance, test requirements, procedures, and acceptance criteria for a transmission line phase conductor with optical fibers commonly known as optical phase conductor (OPPC). An OPPC has the dual performance functions of a current carrying phase conductor, cable, or wire, with telecommunications capabilities. (If required, OPPC could also be used as pole or return conductors for dc systems.) The OPPCs are designed to be located primarily on overhead utility facilities.
This standard includes functional requirements such as electrical, mechanical, optical fiber, environmental and packaging; also included are test requirements related to design, installation, in-service, maintenance, including routine tests. This standard is not intended to supersede any established safety rules, codes, regulations, or practices associated with the use of OPPC. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
This standard covers the construction, mechanical and electrical performance, acceptance criteria, and test requirements for overhead OPPC designed to be located primarily on overhead power utility facilities. The standard provides performance and testing requirements that help ensure within the guidelines of the standard the mechanical integrity, optical fiber integrity, and optical transmission during OPPC lifetime.
New IEEE Standard – Active. The performance, test requirements, procedures, and acceptance criteria for an OPPC are covered in this standard. Optical phase conductor (OPPC) is a phase conductor with optical fibers for telecommunication purposes. Functional requirements, such as electrical, mechanical, optical fiber, environmental, and packaging, and test requirements related to design, installation, in-service, and maintenance, including routine tests, are also covered.
